Join our Tuesday Evening Working Parties

Now that the evenings are warmer and lighter, we’ve set up some evening working party dates so more people can get involved in community growing.

Put the dates in your diary! No need to book, just turn up. Come along to as many as you like.

We now have four growing sites to volunteer at. Three of which have evening working parties.

Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear sensible shoes and bring a drink.

If you have them, please also bring hand tools and gloves. We can provide them otherwise.

Look out for afternoon sessions at Martyr Close mini-meadow, coming soon.

READY TO PICK – SALAD LEAVES

Mixed salad leaves are now ready to pick from the raised beds at the Berners Drive community garden.

Snip or pinch off a few of the bigger, outer leaves on each plant to leave the centre continuing to grow. Wash before eating.

They can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days.

The RHS website says:

“Salad leaves can be ready to harvest almost all year round if you sow small batches regularly and choose suitable varieties for colder weather.”

The garden is located at the bottom of Berner’s Drive, St Albans. Next to the playarea.

Please walk or cycle there is possible.

READY TO PICK – SPINACH LEAVES

Spinach leaves are now ready to pick from the raised beds at the Berners Drive community garden.

Snip or pinch off a few of the bigger, outer leaves on each plant to leave the centre continuing to grow. Wash before eating.

They can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

The RHS website says:

“Spinach is tasty, nutritious and easy to grow. You can even enjoy harvests all year round if you grow several different types. Winter cultivars need a sunny position, while summer varieties benefit from a little shade. “

The garden is located at the bottom of Berner’s Drive, St Albans. Next to the playarea.

Please walk or cycle there is possible.

READY TO PICK – RADISHES

Crunchy and delicious radishes are now ready to pick from this year’s brassica bed at the community garden.

Simply pull up, wash, remove the leaves, and eat fresh.

They can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

The RHS website says:

“Salad radishes are quick and easy to grow from seed, ready to eat in as little as four weeks. These compact plants can be grown in even the smallest of spaces and are great gap-fillers on the veg plot. Sow small batches every few weeks to add a crunchy kick to salads in late spring and summer. “

The garden is located at the bottom of Berner’s Drive, St Albans. Next to the playarea.

Please walk or cycle there is possible.
